The Let's Help London Appeal and Challenge

The Let’s Help London Appeal and Challenge is a fantastic initiative that encourages Londoners to play a central and key role in the New Year celebrations. It also ensures that the charitable proceeds of the event are given to a variety of worthwhile London-based causes.

London Borough Entries

Each London Borough is encouraged to participate in the event by creating an entry that adds to the excitement and entertainment of the Parade whilst at the same time reflecting the character of their community.

Each year we suggest a parade theme. Please note that it is not obligatory to keep to the theme, but it is a helpful guideline to start generating ideas. The Theme for 2008 was ‘Celebrating Youth in London’ . Please come back later in the year to see what the new theme for 2009 will be!

Taking part in the world’s greatest Parade is a fantastic experience. Representing your part of London – your Borough – in the event is a great honour. Don’t miss out – and certainly don’t let your Borough miss out - on London's most fun filled day of the year.

Charity Collection

Each participating Borough brings along its own team of charity collectors who walk the entire route collecting donations for a range of official Mayoral charities. When you see a Let’s Help London Appeal collector, please give generously. There are so many worthwhile causes that need a little extra help, that we should all be encouraged to dig a little deeper. And after all, when else do Londoners get treated to a complete afternoon of free entertainment for all the family?

Judging the Entries

The international panel of judges will be awarding marks for Borough entries according to the following criteria.

The categories are:

Originality How novel is its approach? Have we seen it’s like before?

Entertainment Value How well does the entry play to the crowd and appeal to them?

Display How effective is the use of colour, sound and movement?

Identity How well does the entry represent its particular Borough and its Communities?

Industriousness and Ingenuity How much effort appears to have gone into the preparation of the entry? How much thought has gone into things?

The Prize fund above will be added to by substantial contributions and donations from the organisers and sponsors, the four figure street collection made on January 1st, the proceeds of retiring collections from the numerous Gala Concerts, and the profits from the Parade information hot line.
